Public Records Act Request
GUIDELINES FOR ACCESS TO PUBLIC RECORDS:
CALIFORNIA PUBLIC RECORDS ACT (GOVERNMENT CODE section 6250 et seq.)
CALIFORNIA PUBLIC RECORDS ACT (GOVERNMENT CODE section 6250 et seq.)
The public has a general right to inspect and obtain copies of public records maintained by the Department of Alcohol and Drug Programs (ADP) pursuant to the California Public Records Act (CPRA) or as it is commonly referred to, the Public Records Act (PRA).
While many records are accessible to the public, the PRA as well as other federal and state statutes preclude disclosure of certain records. The records exempt from disclosure include but are not limited to confidential records such as medical records, names of clients receiving services, advice from department attorneys, ongoing investigations, and records prepared in connection with pending litigation.
WHERE TO REQUEST PUBLIC RECORDS
ADP recommends that a request for public records be made in writing and sent by mail, fax, or electronically to the department to ensure the clarity and accuracy of the request and to allow the department to identify the correct records for the response. However, a request may be made orally, by telephone, or in person. All requests should be directed to:
